United States Forest Service Employee

"Great place to live and work, especially if you have a family. Colleagues are friendly and my boss couldn't be better. Don't accept a term position - it can't be extended beyond four years and the pay is poor. You must apply externally, so chances of getting a permanent position are nill, given veteran preference."

What do you like about working at United States Forest Service?

"I love the opportunity to be outdoors. I get to eat lunch on top of mountains, near streams. I enjoy the idea of being part of a team working towards a goal together. I have met many people in the FS that are in the same or similar situation I am in life. I have made a few good friends while working there. I have learned many new skills like checking a car's engine, running a chainsaw, camping out in the woods for two weeks without a shower, hydration. I get to test my limits physically too. We have personal training for an hour each morning. I have become stronger and healthier after joining."

"Talk with those who have done this job before and get a good idea of what you are joining."

What don't you like about working at United States Forest Service?

"There is a strict hierarchy due to experience and the nature of the job. This job attracts aggressive, males that need to show dominance, people that are self centered, people without ambition, people who are emotionally unstable and insensitive. There is major favoritism occurring in the office where it affects the effectiveness of our leadership and alienates those who are not favored. At times it feels very unorganized."

"I would instill more team building exercises in the beginning of the year to foster a more close-knit crew."
