"Despite the beauty, A Sad Place to Work"

What do you like about working at UC San Diego?

"The campus was beautiful and there were many nice people working there."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Pay VERY close attention when you interview. Talk to others who report to your proposed manager. If you are in one of the sad departments, you will know as soon as you walk in the door."

What don't you like about working at UC San Diego?

"It is a systemically dysfunctional organization - it may have changed since I left, but the management structure consisted of people who'd been there, some for more than 40 years. Much damage was done and it was impossible to get any real work done. Staff felt threatened in many departments. It was a most uncomfortable place to work."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The Chancellor was in the process of helping some of her 40+ year managers find their way into retirement, but much more of this needs to happen and then make some pretty dramatic changes to undo the damage that's occurred over many years. The level of trust in most departments is extremely low based on inconsistent and sometimes bizarre management behavior."
