"No work-life balance. Mircro-managed. Difficult environment. Not enjoyable."
What do you like about working at Stony Brook University?
"I enjoyed working with and mentoring students. I enjoyed the travel. I enjoyed the competition and the challenge of the position and the fact that every day was different. It was constantly changing. In addition, I worked with some really good, hard working people. Finally, the benefits (health, retirement) were excellent."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"I cannot speak to the entire institution, only the department in which I worked. To that I would say prepare to be micro-managed. Prepare for promises to be made but not kept."
What don't you like about working at Stony Brook University?
"I cannot speak to the entire company, as it was an institution in higher education. I can only speak to the department in which I worked. I did not enjoy being compared to my predecessor, who was a mentor to me but who was not liked by my supervisor. At times, my supervisor was completely unprofessional. In addition, the entire staff was micro-managed. Furthermore, there was no work-life balance. I averaged 60-70 hour work weeks most of the year. Additionally, although encouraged to take vacations, you were made to feel guilty about actually taking a vacation."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"I would suggest that management appreciate the efforts of its staff more. Stop with the micro-managing and let people do their jobs. Finally, I would suggest that some of the unprofessional behavior should stop as it could lead to future lawsuits."
