Territory sales managers oversee some region of the overall sales picture for a national company. They will typically work as overseers of other sales managers. They are responsible for the sales figures in multiple states or counties, depending upon the size of the company. They will come up with ideas for how to enhance sales growth in that particular area.
Skillset: A territory sales manager needs to have supreme organization skills. They must also have the ability to motivate, since a big part of the job is getting other people to work hard. In addition, a sales manager in this position must be a creative and innovative thinker.
Education: These professionals will usually have a degree in management from a good university. Some will have studied marketing. This position combines both of those aspects of business, so a person could conceivably do well with one or the other. An advanced degree is helpful.
Career Path: This career is founded upon good education and good performance. A person usually will need a college degree to land in these jobs. Likewise, one will rise through the sales ranks of a company. Good performance in a sales capacity can lead to a position as a territory sales manager.
