Skillset: A quality manager must possess excellent leadership skills, have a working familiarity with common quality management systems, and must be adept with statistical analysis of production data. Six Sigma and Total Quality Management are two common areas of expertise for a quality manager. Additionally, a demonstration of strong supervisory skills is frequently required.
Education: Typical educational requirements include a minimum of a bachelor's degree in an applicable scientific field or in engineering. Ongoing training in one of the quality management methodologies is sometimes required by an organization.
Career Path: Quality managers are usually experienced in their industries and with the application of quality metrics. They usually enter their management positions with experience in a subordinate position in quality assurance or quality control. Some organizations require as much as ten years of quality-related experience to consider a candidate for a quality manager position.
