QA testers, or quality assurance testers, are responsible for ensuring that a specific software, program or other media meets specific user requirements for clients.
Skillset: QA testers should be comfortable performing duties such as evaluating, troubleshooting and reporting errors. They should be able to develop checklists and execute problem-solving skills to resolve errors using different types of hardware, networks and operating systems. They should also be able to work effectively with other staff members to assist with customer concerns.
Education: A bachelor's degree in a computer science field is helpful, although it is not always required if you have other related job experience or training as a QA tester. You should be comfortable using computers and other electronics, as well as hold excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Career Path: A higher degree, such as a Master's degree, in the computer sciences field or gaining more experience as a QA tester may allow for an advancement to a Lead/Senior QA or Product Producer position. QA testers may also transfer fields after gaining appropriate experience, such as switching from QA testing in computer software to video game software.
