A project superintendent has various supervisory and administrative duties. Daily tasks revolve around overseeing construction, maintenance, repair and alteration jobs. The project superintendent will plan and coordinate the entire project, working with skilled tradesmen, assistants and laborers as necessary. Project superintendents perform verifications to ensure plans are being followed, plus ascertain that the needed supplies, materials and workers arrive at the site of the project when needed.
Skillset: Project superintendents need to have an in-depth knowledge of the principles of construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of diverse structures. They need to be good communicators to establish a good working relationship with the employees they are in charge of. As the nature of the work requires one to travel often to distant locations and work outside even in inclement weather, project superintendents must be in good physical condition and enjoy working outside.
Education: Graduating from a trade or vocational school in a course that is related to construction will be a strong asset, even if not strictly required by all employers. In some states, obtaining additional licenses or safety certifications will be required.
Career Path: Obtain a diploma that is related to construction. Work at jobs that allow you to get experience supervising construction projects for several years.
