Pharmaceutical sales representatives promote one or more medications to healthcare professionals. They visit doctors’ offices to provide information and samples in the hopes that the physician will choose to prescribe that particular medication to patients.
Skillset: Pharmaceutical sales representatives are salespeople, so a great personality is essential. They need to be able to approach and speak with others in a professional but friendly manner. Pharmaceutical sales representatives spend most of their time in the field, traveling from one medical office to the next. They need to be confident and driven individuals or they will not succeed.
Education: Most pharmaceutical companies require their salespeople to have at least a bachelor’s degree, and certain companies even take class ranking into account. Although pharmaceutical sales representatives are promoting medical products, a degree in the medical field is not strictly necessary. A willingness to learn is essential, though, because these professionals are expected to know important medical information.
Career Path: Prospective pharmaceutical sales representatives should get plenty of experience working as a salesperson. To help open up better job options, a higher college degree or ample successful experience as a pharmaceutical sales representative will be needed.
