Interior designers make homes, offices, shopping malls, airports and restaurants beautiful, safe and functional. They select furniture, fabrics, colors, flooring and lighting fixtures. Interior designers work closely with the client to determine the client's goals and needs. Drawings of the building may be done by hand or by computer assisted design (CAD).
Skill Set: Interior designers must be creative and artistic to develop aesthetically pleasing atmospheres. They must be detail oriented so that the drawings accurately represent the space so that the furniture fits in the rooms. Interior designers must be able to think on their feet and problem solve when there are construction delays or when a material becomes unavailable.
Education: It is best to earn a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in interior design from a college or university accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. An accredited degree raises a job candidate's appeal to potential employers.
Career Path: In order to become fully accredited, interior designers need to pass the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam. In order to sit for this exam, candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree and at least two years of experience.
