Field engineers provide engineering and technical services on a construction site or at a client’s home. Construction companies, insurance companies, computer service repair businesses and telecommunication companies are examples of types of industries that utilize a field engineer on a regular basis. During an average day at work, this person may consult with clients and report issues, progress and concerns to the main office of a business.
Skillset: The type of skills that are desirable in a field engineer is dependent on the type of industry she is in. If the person is working in a telecommunications or computer field, good mathematical skills, electrical engineering skills and troubleshooting skills are necessary. Knowledge of construction and blue prints may be vital for people who are working in other industries.
Education: Many field engineers carry a bachelors degree in a specialized engineering area of study. These specialized areas may include electrical engineering, computer engineering and other similar degrees. Apprenticeships in related fields are also desirable.
