Design consultants meet with business owners and home owners to provide in-depth consultations and design ideas. On an average day, a design consultant may work with textiles, use graphic arts software programs and handle basic business duties. This type of occupation is used in auto manufacturing, textile and furniture manufacturing, fashion production and in interior decorating industries.
Skillset: Design consultants generally have an ability to match textiles with color and lighting to produce something innovative, inviting and attractive. Because the field of design is so large, individuals in this occupation may be required to create new furniture frames, match fabrics with wall paint colors, or come up with a completely unique and functioning landscape design.
Education: Many design consultants carry a bachelors or masters degree in fine arts. Some people will have specialty majors in their degree programs that are centered on the career industry they are entering. Minors and certificates in landscape design, textiles, fashion and art history are popular areas of study for design consultants.
Career Path: The foundation of a solid design consultant career is based on an ability to think outside the box, creative talent, energy and a willingness to work well with a group.
