What do you like about working at The Salvation Army?

"I loved working with clients and donors and having a great leadership role in every community we worked in. There were many stretching opportunities. Every day brought various challenges and decisions. I was promoted several times to greater and greater responsibility roles."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Realize that this organization is a very old and extremely traditional top/down organization. They have many leaders in high places related to most of the divisional and territorial leaders. First generation people (meaning new hires that are unrelated to anyone in high places) do not get the respect of most leaders."

What don't you like about working at The Salvation Army?

"The Salvation Army is a top-down traditionalist Christian ministry/nonprofit organization. Depending on the leadership at the top they sometimes do not listen well to the people at the front lines doing the work. They don't care about one's personal goals and needs when making decisions on officer transfers. When they say you will move it is yes sir, or I quit. When my kids were in High School and I was in College they said move again to me and this last time I chose not to move with them, meaning I quit. I had lost over 100 college credits because of the numbers of times that they moved us."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"There are times when the people on the front lines need to call the shots, especially when it will potentially hurt them and their families by the decisions being made arbitrarily. Leave your officers in a community for a minimum of 7 years."
