Rio Hondo College Employee

"I worked for Rio Hondo College for 10 years, during which I worked for four different departments, including counseling admissions and social science departments. This company has great benefits, frequent salary adjustments due to CSEA union contract negotiations, and has made major infrastructure improvements. Unfortunately, this company has a notoriously poor record when it comes to workplace injuries, including making denying injuries part of its standard, forcing employees to resign while recovering and taking legal proceedings. This is not limited to a particular department or campus division, but apparently internal policy. Because this is a state institution, employees knowingly or unknowingly are not paying into state disability, which means, that in the event an employee is unable to work due to personal or work-related issues, the only option available is family leave. Once family leave is used, employees unable to return to work are laid off. Additionally, because state disability is not available, in a situation an employee sustains a long term work injury which is rejected or denied, and family leave is used, workers' compensation is not available, nor unemployment. Ultimately, that employee is forced to resign, laid off, or similar, losing out on assistance otherwise available through other employers. This company also has had numerous issues with discrimination claims from employees, a professor, and even one of its recent presidents. Having only worked for two universities, I found this particular campus to have a lot of contention between management and employees. This appears to be built-into the overall campus culture."

What do you like about working at Rio Hondo College?

"I love working as a tutor and workshop facilitator for the MESA program at Rio Hondo College. The only bad thing is it's not a viable career option."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I'm not sure what position you'll be interviewing for. If you're interviewing as a professor you've got a lot to prove of yourself. Most of the professors at Rio Hondo College are stellar. If you're trying to get a job as a tutor, like me, the best way to go about that is to do well in the math classes and attend all the AEW workshops available for those classes. Get to know the staff. And make sure to join the MESA program. If you are very active in MESA and you get good grades they'll pretty much hire you no problem. Not much of an interview process. If you're not good enough to make it as a tutor for the MESA program, you might want to try your luck at the MSC (Math and Science Center). They hire people with less skills. However that's a totally different environment than I'm familiar with. The pay is less and the hours are funny. I'm sure it's still a kickback job compared to being a waiter or something, though."

What don't you like about working at Rio Hondo College?

"Like I said earlier the only thing bad about the job is it's not a viable career"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I wouldn't be as good as who's running it now"
