Product managers are responsible for promoting or introducing a product or service to the public. In many cases, the person must first identify a targeted demographic before implementing action to reach consumers. During a typical work day, a product manager will assemble advertising teams, meet with account representatives and give presentations using computer software programs.
Skillset: Many product managers have a strong background in advertising, retail sales and business management. Successful individuals in this profession have an ability to communicate clearly and effectively and they also pay attention to detail. Working with credit lenders, company owners and consumers requires a person to have excellent people skills and leadership skills.
Education: Many companies search for product managers who have a bachelors degree at a minimum. The degree should be in business management, marketing or another closely related area of study. Classes that include retail statistics, advertising, and business administration should be considered.
Career Path: A long-term foundation for a successful career as a product manager is based on a person’s ability to identify a consumer demographic and effectively build an advertising plan. Account management courses and internships at marketing firms are desirable.
