Pensacola State College Employee

"Pros: I have fabulous coworkers. My direct supervisor loves what he does and strives to produce tools that will benefit the college and help the students. He is open to ideas and encourages forward progress, essential in the web design and development world. Lower level management is proactive and seeks to move the product forward. Great holiday schedule, hours, time off, and decent benefits. Cons: Top leadership seems more concerned with personal goals than student needs. Upper management does not often listen to lower management. Pay is minuscule. A culture of apathy, status quo, and whining are pervasive. Whoever screams the loudest is prioritized, even if other needs are more dire. While there is technically an order of command, it is not held to nearly enough. The struggle between those wanting to take the college forward and those lazily trying to ride out a paycheck till retirement leads to a great deal of interdepartmental strife. Advice to Management: Stop micro-managing and lay out a vision for the college. Drum up financial support and lead by example. Quit allowing the loudest voice of complaint to win the day. Create an actual order of command and stick to it. But mostly, LEAD."

What do you like about working at Pensacola State College?

"The college could be a great place to work. Unfortunately, administrators change so quickly that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Quality people are not recognized and adjuncts are favored over full time faculty. Individuals who are inadequate at lower administrative levels go undetected because of the frequent upper administrative turnover."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Because Florida is a Right to Work state, before you accept a position at this college; Check to see how many people before you were hired and let go before they got tenure for the position. Unless of course, you only plan on being in the area for no more than 2 years."

"There needs to be a review process in place for the lower management positions, like department heads."
