Coding Field Reviewer

"Good for medical professional retirees and those seeking flexibility and independence over pay/benefits."

What do you like about working at Outcomes Health Information Solutions?

"Flexibility. Since it is a remote position, you are boss free in terms of direct supervision and you can make your own hours for their seasonal projects. Also, it is self-directed; the employee downloads their schedule, assembles their tools (laptop, scanner etc...) and reports to whatever doctors office is assigned. It is rather nice to experience that autonomy and independence; also to experience different company cultures at various doctors offices. As long as you dress nicely, appear professional and interact well with strangers in a medical office environment and have experience abstracting data from medical charts/records you will perform nicely. They pay is actually competitive. They do pay for mileage, and all the equipment is sent to the employee via UPS on company dime and return postage is paid as well when project is complete."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"You need experience in medical terminology; either a LPN, RN or medical coder or perhaps transcription--so highlight those skills. As long as you realize you will need to print a lot of materials on your own dime; travel and be able to lift the carrying case up stairs if necessary (sometimes elevators don't work!) and live without benefits; this job does have rewards in flexibility and independence."

What don't you like about working at Outcomes Health Information Solutions?

"Once you commit to a certain amount of hours you are obligated to travel to whatever doctors offices are assigned. Normally, this isn't a problem as the schedulers at Outcomes are good about lining them up in the same geographical area but occasionally you will find yourself burning a lot of daylight, time, gas and energy crisscrossing the State and the same roads. Also, a warning--you should always check the MapQuest maps for each assigned location (unless you have a GPS unit) before heading out. Getting lost is not fun--wastes time and makes you late for the entire day's schedule. If you hit a location at the wrong time and their office staff is at lunch you will have to wait until they get back. Also, you will need to use the carry case (on wheels with handle) to bring laptop, scanner and plug in wires. Sometimes you may have to carry this up stairs if elevator is out--not fun. This job is best for a married, and/or financially secure individual--not a single mom--due to the lack of benefits (part-time seasonal work) and variable schedule (an employee may be available for a certain amount of hours but it doesn't mean that is what you will be scheduled for) so it is hard to count on a certain amount in any given paycheck. The other drawback is the uploading of the chart copies--when you do the chart review at the doctors office and scan the documents into the laptop--you have to upload these same files to Outcomes within 24 hours. It doesn't sound like it would take very long but it can be a real pain. If their website has a lot of traffic in the evening, it can take up to two hours to upload all the files. The administrative side of this job is not paid for--so you are not paid for the work you do at home preparing for your day or when the day is done--ie.. paid for your time to upload this information to their site."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Field reviewers should be paid for their time at home. There should be a time clock feature on the website. Besides, they could easily see how long it took to upload all the files for the day due to the time stamp as each one is uploaded. Downloading and printing all the schedules before work and the uploading task is work related, costs money in terms of ink and paper and should be reimbursed."
