"Not A Good Place To Be In Sales"

What do you like about working at New York Eye?

"The frame products are very good and the clients we service."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Ask whether others have been in the alleged new territory they claim they are expanding into..especially if you are interviewing for a west coast sales position. I found out through customers that there had been several past sales people in my new territory-- so the hiring managers blatently lied about this fact. Many of my prospective customers will not do business with New York Eye"

What don't you like about working at New York Eye?

"This company hires us as employees but treats us as independent contractors. Its run by a CEO who is very, very tight with sales expenses and does not invest in current technology which would help sales, save time and expedite orders. Sales reps are still expected to fax orders into the main office and then wait for a confirming call back that the order was received. That worked great back in 1989, but please-- how about some Ipads or field PC's for the amount of accounts and volume sales reps have The VP of Sales has been in the role for over 2 decades and simply does not believe in investing in furthering the technology of the sales force. Also be warned--if you are a new hire, you will be flying to Atlanta for 1 week of training at the home of this VP of Sales. Bring your index cards because that's how you'll be keeping track of your accounts. If for any reason the VP of Sales doesnt believe you're a good fit for the company-- you will be terminated before the end of the training. This is an at will employer so they hide behind that and use it to get rid of sales people who want to ask too many questions or simply question why they are using outdates field sales methods, etc."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"If we are suppose to be employees then offer us full benefits instead of the lousy $150 medical reinbursement you receive towards a health care premium. You do not receive this, however if your spouse already has benefits. Also how about reinbursing us for full per mile travel mileage instead of a flat $500 a month. In California, gas is much higher than the rest of the country and with this sales role you will have huge territories to cover so $500 a month is nothing for vehicle expenses. Please consider reinbursing us for office supplies and more than $60 per night in a hotel room. From a training perspective--supply your sales reps with modern technology to help expedite the sales process. Get someone else to train the new sales hires who is in tune with more efficient and useful sales techniques. Conduct these meetings in a professional setting like a hotel conference room and not out of the kitchen table of the VP of Sales. Stop being so cheap and INVEST in your sales force!"
