"I have worked for North Carolina State Government for over twenty-three years and over those years for different state agencies. State government cannot be the easiest organization to work. The reason why is because duties and responsibilities are enumerated in policy and within statue. This creates within the different agencies two (2) separate management styles. The first is a very rigid style that says the policy says "X" and will do only "X". The second style is less rigid, and says the policy says "X", but how can we work within the confines of "X" by thinking outside of the box to successfully do what the citizens of North Carolina ask and expect of us? That second style is the management style I have seen at DEQ for the past seven plus years. It is the reason why I say DEQ is a good place to work, and would encourage any young person with a science or engineering background to apply."
