What do you like about working at The Modesto Bee?

"I enjoyed the day-to-day pace of projects and orders. The daily expectation of good work appearing in print, fast feedback and how to improve. The immediate impact and success of jobs well executed by myself or my staff."

What don't you like about working at The Modesto Bee?

"Red tape. There were so many lines of direction, sales managers, directors, company policies, union representatives, human resources, finance department that all had an impact on how my department operated. I was always asked to arbitrate those conflicts which was never comfortable and seemed to interfere with our primary goals as a department."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Keep your communications lines simple and direct. Seek consistency and objectivity when dealing with internal employee functions."

"The high caliber of co-workers, people friendly professionals and personal relationships. My job allowed me to be creative and productive on a daily fast-paced schedule."

"Good sales people can prosper anywhere, regardless of the position you are applying for, McClatchy Co. appreciates good salesmanship and is always seeking that potential."

What don't you like about working at The Modesto Bee?

"Corporate dominance of the company from a privately owned, family business was slow but dramatic in its attitude towards their employees in regard to benefits and opportunities, even well before the downward economic slide of newspapers. The disingenuous attitude of upper management is common among their CEO's and any negotiation should be at arm's length."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Value your long term career employees! This is a company ruined by an onslaught of transient opportunist executives climbing up the ladder on the backs of established professionals who are often marginalized and ignored after years of dedication to the company."
