Mobile Tool Management Employee

"Cool work doing industrial automation, sometimes in cold, noisy labs, with cool equipment to work with and (usually) lots of freedom to create. A mixed experience depending on who you were contracted to at Boeing (you were told, not asked). MTM acted as a contract house providing services to a Boeing division, however that Boeing division is being broken up and that's over. Initially a great experience doing creative work in industrial automation and robotics. A small but growing company; they hit a market bump and dumped their contractors. Contracting was Form 1099: a good rate, no benefits, buy your own equipment and insurance, no fixed term. At some point you're told the contract is over, stop work at the end of the week. Maybe there'll be more work, no guarantees. Internal communications very poor but improving: send status reports up the chain, hear nothing back to let you know whether what you're doing is wanted. Advice to company: - be willing to learn industry standard development practices. - improve communications and workload management. - establish and maintain a shared understanding with employees and contractors of what you want - give frequent feedback ('steering'), emphasizing (or at least noticing) the positive. - get supervisors some management training: managing people is a very different skill set from doing technical work! 'Ding, you're a manager' doesn't provide those skills. - try to see issues from other people's point of view. When an engineer happily tells you something technical, likely they are being friendly and showing enthusiasm for their work."
