"I have worked for the department for many years. Administration does not support the line officers enough. The salary is below average and the County refuses to negotiate union contracts with respect, fairness and in a timely manner. My fellow workers usually get along with each other quite well. Our union is small and officer morale is very low. Once administration starts promoting from within and increases our base pay things will be better. And you can't beat the benefits. However, the County refuses to send officers back to the Academy for further training. All Juv. Det. Ofc. in NJ are NOT considered law enforcement, unlike adult corrections. This is a great place for someone with ambition, to be used as a stepping stone to further his/her career in law enforcement. We are constantly understaffed and Administration refuses to give incentives to take this otherwise low paying job. Turnover is high and there are many officers stuck doing double shifts. We have 4 Counties bringing in their juvenile offenders yet we are among the lowest paid JDOs in the state. Also, we cannot move out of Middlesex County, which is very expensive to live in."
