What do you like about working at Komatsu Ltd.?

"My mother said if I couldn't say anything nice, then it's best to say nothing at all."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"In Japan, people are hired because of their ability to fit in. Skills, education, background are not important. Fitting in is important, but so is competency. Expect interviews to be hazier than typical places. Also expect job offered will be the last position you will get (promotions are rare, even rarer for competency)."

What don't you like about working at Komatsu Ltd.?

"Most managers are B-team quality at best. No vision or planning, just pure reaction. Decision making is weak, partly due to B-team managers, partly because Japanese overlords do not permit local decisions. Americans are treated as secondary humans by xenophobic managers on rotation from Japan. As a result, very little movement for promotion."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Hand out backbones to various managers. Too much kowtowing to Japan at the expense of North American locations."

"Low pay. Small chance of advancement. Slightly hostile enviroment"

What do you like about working at Komatsu Ltd.?

"The Chattanooga plant was better to work at. I don't recommend the Newberry plant."

"Learn to manage others in a way to encourage and motivate them."
