A designer creates the designs of various objects. This diverse occupation allows an individual the opportunity to design jewelry, furniture, clothing or other objects. Designers can also develop designs for landscaping, cities and other places. Each field of design is a specialty area requiring unique talents. They work for clothing manufacturers, furniture companies, the entertainment industry and other employers.
Skill Set: Designers must be imaginative and precise. They may work with coworkers or alone. Jobs may be outdoors or indoors. A designer may be required to sketch their designs on paper, or use specialized computer software.
Education: A designer may attend an art school or university. They will be required to attend courses in various subjects. The subjects will depend on the specialty area of the design student. A designer will usually attain an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Design students also work in practical settings to learn from more experienced designers.
Career Path: Designers can progress in their careers with more experience and training. Many disciplines of designing require a beginner to work as an apprentice. Most designers will create a portfolio of their original work. A designer can also start their own business, and have private clients.
