Skillset: Electrical construction work requires heavy labor, so journeyman electricians should be able to lift up to 100 pounds and carry up to 50. Proficiency and comfort with common tools and diagnostic equipment is important. Color vision is essential for telling wires apart, and problem-solving skills and good judgement are vital for work which may be complex and dangerous.
Education: Many journeyman electricians learn their trade in a formal apprenticeship under a master electrician. Today, many electricians get their start by attending trade school or community college for a certificate or associate degree, which sometimes counts toward completion of an apprenticeship.
Career Path: Graduation from an electrician program is often helpful for obtaining acceptance into an apprenticeship. To gain experience and master several aspects of the trade, electricians sometimes switch jobs several times throughout a career.
