Volunteers are the backbone of myriad not for profit enterprises, charities, and services. While this is not a paying career, many volunteers use volunteering opportunities to network and meet potential professional contacts. Alternatively, it is a good opportunity for seniors to stay active, or for college students and young people to get a taste of real-world employment.
Skillset: Every volunteer position will require a different set of skills. Many volunteer positions require no more than good people skills and an eagerness to help out. Some volunteer positions offer professionals the opportunity to lend their skills to a worthy cause; for example, an attorney may provide pro bono legal services to impoverished people, or a doctor may take on uninsured patients free of charge.
Education: With the exception of specialized volunteer positions where professionals lend their services to those who could not otherwise afford it, most volunteer positions do not require any specific education or professional background.
Career Path: There is no guarantee of future paid employment with most volunteer positions. However, volunteering may be a way for some people to meet future business contacts, or to get their foot in the door in future paying jobs in the non-profit sector.
