Working at Invetech in San Diego, CA: 2 Employee Reviews

Invetech Employee

"The company is headquartered in Melbourne Australia with the projects being run out of Melbourne, though all of the San Diego projects are medical with US based clients. These contract-engineering projects are in the cell therapy space and in the diagnostic space. For diagnostic side, which range from low to medium complexity that is somewhat heavier on mechanical development and lighter on electrical and software. They are very process oriented and heavy on design reuse, so if you’re used to creative R&D development, this is not the place. The management and engineering structure (again based in Melbourne) is hierarchical with a defined chain of command, so if you’re used to a flatter structure, again this is not the place. The engineering hierarchy is junior, senior, associate principal, principal, and senior principal. They expect everyone from a senior engineer on up to be a lead, though this doesn’t necessarily mean leading a team, it’s more about managing schedule, resources, and budget. The salary and bonus are a little weak for a lead engineer working with medical products. The afternoon to early evening can be filled with meetings with the Melbourne folks. The travel is probably overstated especially with trips to Melbourne. It’s basically a one-way street with a steady influx of Australians coming in to “help” ranging from a few weeks to a few years. The site manager is also Australian. There seems to be a general mistrust of the capabilities of the San Diego engineering staff. The office space is tight, semi-open and can be noisy. With all this said, the turnover is high. I believe the person with the longest employment with the company is five years. Most don’t stay more than a few years. Melbourne requires strict unwavering compliance, which may be foreign to many American high-tech professionals."
