"Worked in IT for several years at this company. A lot of the technology is old - currently several production servers have not been properly updated in 7 years. Plans to property migrate to new platforms are constantly shelved. Handling new security threats as they come out is a burden, old servers are harder to patch. Plan on spending a lot of time "keeping the lights on" with old technology. Company is starting to fall in love with outsourcing new development. New projects will be handed off to contractors to "get it done fast", but the contractors will rely heavily on internal IT to tie into old systems. The new code base is not stored in-house, and is kept with the contractor. So, afterwards it's tech support on black boxes. There has been no formal training done in years. There are shelves full of programming books, that were relevant in 2000. Working here will not be a good rung in a long term career ladder in software development. It will be hard to hone skills with any new software development styles. On the other side, there's no on-call support, and the work atmosphere is usually calm. It's located in a beautiful part of Vermont. It's a small company, so most people know each other well. The benefits are nice, but it'll take a few years until vacation time kicks in. There's a strong push from the business end to expand. There are good ideas being implemented, you just might not be the one to do it. The contractors get the new stuff, and the glory. I hope they don't overextend their foundation - it's getting old and crumbly."
