What do you like about working at Gulf Coast State College?

"I appreciate and am grateful that some of my coworkers have a great sense of humor, like me, which helps all of us to endure an extremely stressful and taxing environment, and gives us that extra lift we need to keep smiling. I am grateful for tuition reimbursement benefit, because it is my belief that education is a lifelong journey that one must always pursue. I love the views from my corner office! My enviable views can be seen through any of the many windows of my Zen-like, private office. Although, I am in the field of finance, occasionally I have the opportunity to branch out and use my creative talents creating publications, websites and PowerPoint presentations - these tasks usually left to the experts in the marketing department - I have been lucky enough to enjoy... like my arts and crafts moments of brevity."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Work the hours that you are paid for and don't kill yourself trying to squeeze two weeks into one because there's too much work and not enough hours in the day. Your work is your JOB, not your LIFE so don't let it get so far as to effect your health. YOU are worth than that! Do the best you can everyday - no one can ask for than that."

What don't you like about working at Gulf Coast State College?

"I enjoy that I am not micro-managed, but here it seems to the other extreme. There is no communication, as if all is expected to be telepathic. When new policies and/or regulations come out, the management never communicate these changes with those that work for them. As staff members continue their day business as usual, they are only made aware of the change(s) when something bad happens, followed by the usual marathon hustle trying to right any wrongs - all, which could have been avoided with a simple email.Communication is so very important in ANY type of relationship, and certainly not something an organization, or an individual in that organization, should be neglecting. While the level communication is nearly non-existent, where it seems to flourish is in the area of gossiping. On many occasions, one could turn a corner right at the perfect moment to hear people talk cruelly about them, or another coworker. Sadly, the worst offender is one the members of management, and how cruel one can be to one they work with.I also don't enjoy having to work 60-70 hours week, on salary for 35 hours a week, with no sort of compensatory time for my tireless hours and efforts - due to the college being understaffed, all while our clients grow by the thousands and new multi-million dollar buildings continue to go up before the last one has even been completed."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would make sure that all employees know that they are valued and an essential member of the organization: from the maintenance crew to the president. For many employees, with the amount of hours spent at work, their job becomes their second home and those they work with, become their second family, One's work environment should be comforting - one of encouragement and positive reinforcement - not draconian managerial fear tactics and psychological abuse. Many studies have shown that happy employees are productive employees, so with these studies showing that productivity is higher in companies promoting happiness (ex. Asia and aromatherapy through air-vents to boost happiness and productivity levels of employees and Google providing standard, free luxuries for the benefit, comfort and happiness of their employees), one has to wonder why such cruel management styles are still in existence, when we now have several studies showing that un-blissfulness effects the bottom line. I would have a praise generously, and criticize constructively type of management style. I want my employees to be happy for more reasons than to keep me in the black; the thought of employees having trouble going to sleep because of their excitement of going to work tomorrow, instead of the dread of it....to me, is priceless."
