"Your manager's favoritism determines your promotion in both positions and in money. I was promised a performance raise...only got a minimal job wage "raise" according to the State's new minimum wage. Customers' behavior runs from "customers are always right" to racism. "Contract" is a sugarcoat for favoritism and which decade you were hired. They will ask who hired you and your hired date...all processes to add gas to the fire on your troubles."

"I have worked for Fred Meyer for 8 months. In the store I work at in particular, the technology is behind other stores. This can make work frustrating. But the managers are great and understanding. We have a good system in place that keeps the department nice and organized."

"Positive: Rewards card discounts, other perks - rental car and hotel, Ticketmaster discount, jewelry discount, great medical benefits HSA matching, 3 week vacation, 4 personal days and 401 K matching up to 5%. Negative: Company culture at Main Office Portland needs improvement - upper Management and certain clicks impact the culture negativity. For the first year it may not be present. They are trying - Holiday parties, and passing out cookies for appreciation day with the assistance of Cultural Counsel Committee."

"I worked for Fred Meyer for over 15 years. There was always ample opportunities to try new things and seek out opportunities. This was a great place to be if you wanted to hit the ground running and make something of yourself."

"This is the Seattle, Lake City neighborhood store. I was promised 10 full-time days of training during the interview, I received 1 day. It was on the 4th day. Departmental manager would call in sick or help the graveyard shift workers. He was never around. I didn't know what the priorities of the job were daily. I just made it up. No one told me what the store intercom codes were. Only 1 worker/shift. It's a busy department. They need st least 2. Especially when one's new. I was thrown to the wolves. Again, no promised training. It's a dead-end position with little room for advancement. Who gets promoted is achieved by favoritism with the managers, not merit or work performance. The smokers who were more than one-half the workers were given hourly breaks. I, a nonsmoker only got the required breaks. Management said that the smoking worker needs to be relaxed. I have no reason to take "extra breaks." The workers, including management use profanity on a regular, casual basis. There is no intelligent conversation to be made. It's one reason why it's not a good place for a nutrition clerk if one is a college graduate (most of the workers are just high school graduates). Moreover, the place was gross as the back room where the food was stored, there were many large rats roaming around. The place did not look clean. Additionally, only 1 employee bathroom for the entire store. It was unkempt."

"Working customer service is ok. I just don't get paid enough for all the work I do and how poorly I get treated by people. Every day my company adds another computer that has a new program I have to learn or they're changing policies again. Customer service is not the way to go!"

"They hire internally to a fault. There are MANY upper management employees who have been promoted way above their ability to the hindrance of the company as a whole."
