An estimator determines different aspects of a project for a company or organization. On a typical day, an estimator will use all of their resources to determine the time required and budget needed to complete a project. They will then estimate how much revenue the project could potentially bring in. It is also their job to keep communication going with company suppliers and vendors.
Skillset: Estimators should be proficient in mathematics and the use of computer software that is standard within their profession. They must have strong communication and management skills, as well as superior problem solving abilities. Mathematical expertise is also essential as estimators will constantly readjust budget and revenue numbers throughout the lifespan of a project.
Education: Employers strongly prefer that an estimator holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, engineering, or architecture. Completion of advanced computer software and mathematics courses is recommended.
Career Path: A success estimator will demonstrate superb mathematical skills and strong management and communication abilities. Pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, engineering, or architecture and consider a master’s degree to increase credentials and promotional opportunities.
