Overview Clarkson University is a private university established in 1896 under the name Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology in memory of Thomas S. Clarkson, an entrepreneur who was killed while working in a sandstone quarry near Potsdam. The name of the college was later changed to the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology and then to Clarkson College of Technology. On February 24, 1984 the school was renamed to simply Clarkson University.

Clarkson University is located in Potsdam, New York. The university is also composed of The Clarkson School, a special division that allows high school seniors to replace their final year of high school with a year of college. This program is one of the few in the country that allows high school students the chance to get ahead in their curriculum and become freshmen of advanced standing.
