  • City Carrier @ UPS in West Covina, CA

"The very few things I like about being a CCA is the people I serve. In the neighborhoods I deliver mail people seem to understand that it is a very difficult job and appreciate the work I do. Both a plus and minus is that it is a job that is not in doors under constant supervision. you're by yourself which is both a good and bad. The definite minus is that as a CCA you're exposed to the elements. So extreme heat, extreme cold, and extreme rain are part of the gig. The last positive is that you do get exercise. The minus are many. I would say that the post office is the Walmart of federal jobs and organizations. However, Walmart actually treats its employees better than the post office treats its carriers. If you're a CCA it takes two years before you get any type of benefits. If it's RCA (Rural Carrier Assistant ) its 7. There is no work life balance. They "schedule" you as per union contract but they don't follow it. That is to be compliant with the union. CCA's and RCA's are in fact gig workers. You never know what your days off are or how long you will work. Going back to work/life balance it's impossible to plan for anything or even see about a second job to compensate for the lack of money this job provides. The work environment is poor with management actively engaging in mental abuse. It is not uncommon for management to single out employees and harass them, engaging in deconstructive termination (Creating a hostile work environment to force someone to quit) or out right termination in which they write employees up for any and all minor infractions in order to get them fired. This gets worse the closer a CCA or RCA gets to being converted. The benefits offered before conversion are poor at best. While there is union representation it varies but in most places poor. In short this is not a good place to work which is a shame since the post office provides such a necessary function and against all odds manage to attract good employees who deserve better"
