CEOs (chief executive officers) make sure that an organization reaches its goals by creating strategies and policies. They also provide direction for their organization or company by managing operations and collaborating with other top executives. The different types of CEOs include chief financial officers, chief sustainability officers, chief operating officers and chief information officers.
Skillset: CEOs should have excellent leadership abilities, well-tuned decision making skills and be able to communicate their ideas clearly. Executive officers also have to negotiate and persuade others to agree to their ideas. Other vital qualities include self-direction, time-management and problem-solving skills.
Education: A majority of CEO's have bachelor's degrees in business administration, public administration, law or an area closely related to their field. Top executive officers working in large corporations often have Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees.
Career Path: Chief executive officers should have adequate managerial experience. If they work in a company that has an area of specialty, they should have experience in it as well. General managers looking to become CEOs can do so by participating in company training programs and executive development programs. CEOs also have the option of becoming certified by the Institute of Certified Professional Managers in order to become Certified Managers (CM).
