Engineering Manager

"It's like a medieval feudal system"

What do you like about working at Cardinal Glass?

"There are no rules, no regulations, no financial controls, no over-site beyond the plant level."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"This is not the company with which you should start a career."

What don't you like about working at Cardinal Glass?

"The business is not professionally managed. Its more like mom-and-pop routine where the business model encourages the plant manager to be a dictator. Career development is non-existent. Your career path is defined by who knows you and who you are associated with. This company makes gut decisions throughout all levels of the company. Often these gut decisions affect the talent pool by driving effective managers out of the company. Often at the levels of plant manger and above the opinions of talented managers are discarded as distractions. When I worked for Cardinal Glass there were only about 50 investors of this billion dollar company. They were an exclusive bunch that often would back-stab each other with little or no justification in order to climb the latter of importance."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The company has to become more professionally managed. They should create a business model that incorporates outside opinions. One improvement would be for the CEO to retire. He's been there for about 40 years and is hardly engaged in the business. When I was there there was a lot of political jockeying about who would be the next CEO."
