"I was approached by Boxfish in China to work as an English Tutor. Everything sounded great. You work part-time, from home using their app to communicate with the students, you can set your own hours, and they pay you by the hour. It sounded like a pleasant, no-fuss, part-time work. However: 1. They misrepresent themselves online, claiming they have recruited more than 1000 western teachers (they have not), and that their app is compatible with both IOS and Android (Only later that they told me they could only do IOS and Android was still on a try-out period). 2. The app is continually faulty, but the teachers would generally be blamed and penalized for not having "the correct device". 3. Their communication skills are lacking. They hold back crucial information, give their employees no feedback and often resort to threats. 4. The work life balance they promise does not prevent the team leaders to call/message their employees outside of the employee's work hours - even at midnight. 5. They will penalize the teacher if the teacher could not complete the class due to app failure, and even if the student decided to skip the class - all frequent events that is not of the teacher's control. As a result, the "hourly rate" adds up to very little."
