Bethesda Lutheran Communities Employee

"I worked as DSP from 2016-2019. It was advertised as Christian Company but I did not see any thing Christian about it after training. Sweet individuals we cared for. Team leads House managers high turn over. Lack of support from management. Low pay. Worked short staffed often"

RN Consultant

"Stay away from this job unless you are desperate for money."

What do you like about working at Bethesda Lutheran Communities?

"Being around the Developmentally Disabled clients. The clients tend to be loving and friendly. A few of the employees are nice people. One RN took the time to mentor me on the computer. Also, the Direct Care Staff people were very easy to work with and generally good to the clients"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Stay away from the Lake Forest branch. It might be better at other branches. As far as getting the job, I would read up on the State Department of Health licensing requirements for ICF-DDH group homes. Also, be willing to work in a team environment as you will be part of the management team for the branch. Your boss will be the Area Director or the Regional Director."

What don't you like about working at Bethesda Lutheran Communities?

"I was completely overloaded with work as a new employee and never had a chance to catch up. I was in charge of too many clients and I was constantly called by staff in my off hours for emergencies. Also, I had no support from my boss who was overbearing. If was difficult to be the third RN when the other two RNs were had already been working together for a long time. I did not feel accepted. I was on call 24-7 and my whole life became a job. Also, this is supposedly a Lutheran and Christian-run business. The only Christian-acting members of the company, were 2 pastors on staff. (I am referring to people in management here). The job was mis-represented to me as a fairly easy job. I had no warning that a large part of my job would be to deal with defending our licensure with the State Department of Health. Members of the Department of Health were very demanding and constantly interfering with the RN's jobs. The other 2 RNs I worked with did not like their jobs and only kept them because they felt they were better than nothing. I believe they felt trapped in their jobs."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"They need to understand the challenges of the RN position, and the time-consuming nature of the job. I suggest they hire LVN's to do some of the RN's work, to leave the RN's some time to do paperwork and to deal with the State Department of Public Health."
