Manufacturing Supervisor
in Berkeley, CA

"Bayer was a great place to start and learn a lot of things in biiotech. However, it was not good for long term due to restructures and constant reorganization. It was some of the best 20 years of my career where I have a lot of friends who still work there including people I trained who have gone otno becoming managers in various other departments. The only thing I did not like was that to learn more and be challenged to do so you had to obtain permission and go outside of your departement on your own time which is what I did for three years to learn cell culture development."

What do you like about working at Bayer Technology Services?

"They challenged me to be a free thinker and helped me obtain a career, life balance between home, school, and work. I worked 60 to 80 hours a week there on many occassions. I liked the people and the diversity of the company and the benifits it had to offer. What I called the golden hand cuffs. It was difficult to find a company that would pay a senior supervisor that much money and that is why I left to become a Manager at Xoma. However, without all the management programs that Bayer offered to their employees I would not have been able to obtain that position."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It is a challenging place to work if you push yourself to be more than you are and can be very rewarding so don't let other opinions affect yours if you want to move forward and make changes and start learning new things, go for it."

What don't you like about working at Bayer Technology Services?

"Sometimes the work became mundane within the plasma manufacturing department. Once I transferrred into fermentation with a developing department that was growing and needed someone who was organized, thinks outside the box, and is self motivated, I was fine. However, many people complained about it and did not like the routine operations on manufacturing."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Challenge their employees to look for things of interested to learn and ask for assistance from their supervisors."
