Registered Nurse

"Unfortunately Bakersfield Memorial Hospital was not up to the minimum standards of care at the time I was there and many nurses left that insitution with only the select few that had no other option but to continue to work in the toxic work environment."

What do you like about working at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital?

"Nothing. After woking there for just one week, I realized I had made a drastic mistake in my career move. I stuck it out for a few more months in hopes it could change, but unfortunately, it never improved."

What don't you like about working at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital?

"Inexperienced management, poor staffing, not enough working equipment to perform job duties, inadequate anesthesia services, physicians not held accountable for their verbal abuse and harrassment, and no support for nurses. The labor and delivery unit I worked on did not have the services available to handle an emergency cases that arrived to the unit. One woman had to have an emergency c-section under a local anesthetic because they did not have anesthesia available at the time of the patient's arrival. The institution made threats to nurses to not tell anyone outside the institution about this case. If they worked within the standard of care, this would not have occured. Nurses were forced to put out fires every day."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Support the nurses as they are the people providing the care. Hold physicians accountable for their verbal abuse towards nurses as management in this institution either chose to ignore it or didn't know what to do. Verbal abuse or harrassment should not be tolerated in a work environment and unfortunately it was at Memorial Hospital. It was a pity that I had to take my whealth of knowledge and expertise elsewhere to a place that does hold physicians accountable and does support nurses. This institution where I currently work as an RN is in the process of achieving Magnet Status which I am a proud employee for this institution. Unfortunately a Bakersfield Memorial manager instucted nurses to stop giving cadillac care and start giving VW care. This philosophy is not consistent with my values as I am a patient advocate and quality care is what I strive to do. If an institution does not support quality care, then I don't belong there."
