"great working environment / awful bureaucracy and institutional momentum"

What do you like about working at Arizona State University?

"Freedom and flexibility were awesome. I had a great office, a nice title and a decent salary."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"My biggest would be that you should be aware that many positions are posted not because they are actually conducting a real search but because they have someone specific who they want to hire and they are just going through the required motions to make it appear as though they are doing everything on the up-and-up (that's not universal but common enough that you shouldn't be disappointed if you aren't hired). In any case, when applying, be sure to actually read the job description and complete all of the requirements - having sat on several hiring committees, it was incredible to see how many people would either shot gun applications and not bother writing a quick letter for the position they were applying for (and more than a few times we got applications from grossly unqualified people for technical positions - don't do that)."

What don't you like about working at Arizona State University?

"Getting anything significant done is frustrating and challenging to such an extent that by the time it is accomplished, you feel demoralized and as if you have wasted your time."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Increase agility and cut back (significantly) on the management overhead - there are a lot of people who make negligible contributions yet get paid extremely well."
