"Nationwide is a great place to work. Nationwide has a set of values that they really do a good job of incorporating into the day to day life of all of their associates. Since Nationwide is a large company, there are plenty of opportunities to get promoted. Nationwide has a great internal learning and development group that allows associates to grow in their knowledge of the business."

"I worked at Nationwide from 2006 until 2012, in various roles. During the early years, while developing my career, I looked forward to moving up in the company hierarchy. As my career progressed, the more I interacted with mid- and senior- level executives, I found myself very discouraged. I ultimately left because I did not want to grow up to become what I found there."

"Nationwide was a fantastic place to work. I loved the environment and my supervisor was really good. Had me working on real world problems and could see the results. That can be rare for an intern."

"Nationwide is a solid company with the attention to quality of code and responsible coding. Their SDLC cycle is sometimes too slow for my taste, but this is needed to limit the risk that is often very substantial as its monetary and PR value. For this reason, the code undergoes exhaustive review and you get detailed specs and requirements."

"I've been working for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company for 4 years. They have a very friendly environment and they are very customer focused, so our transition to the support team should be very detailed so that they can do a better job to support the customers. The company employs over 36,000 employees and the headquarters is located in Columbus, Ohio."

"This company really cares about their employees and customers."

What do you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"The company is very customer focused, has clear goals, supports their employees and there are many opportunities for advancement."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Be professional, dress professional, come prepared, speak intelligently, as questions, be very interactive and upbeat."

What don't you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"It's a big company so there is a lot of red tape. Also, the company tends to promote people who do not have any experience. The company looks for natural talent and leadership ability more so than technical expertise."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Look for more technical expertise in the people that you promote to upper management positions, not just leadership ability."

Director of IT

What do you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"There's an emerging Lean / Agile / Six Sigma movement within the company, and it's breathing new life into the IT department."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you're early in your career, Nationwide is a great place to go. If you're say 15 years in or so, it's not so great."

What don't you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"There's too much red tape to get even the simplest things done. No one is incentivized to do the right thing, and everyone is incentivized to do things right. Senior management in IT never gets their hands dirty, and consequently often has no idea what's actually going on. Waaaaay too much focus on job descriptions and way too little focus on making sure the customer is being taken care of FIRST."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would immediately put the entire company through Lean / Six Sigma / Agile training, and make it VERY clear that you can either get on the bus right now, or you will be run over by the bus. Enough fooling around trying to make 20,000 people with vested interests in the status quo happy."
