"There's an emerging Lean / Agile / Six Sigma movement within the company, and it's breathing new life into the IT department."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you're early in your career, Nationwide is a great place to go. If you're say 15 years in or so, it's not so great."

What don't you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"There's too much red tape to get even the simplest things done. No one is incentivized to do the right thing, and everyone is incentivized to do things right. Senior management in IT never gets their hands dirty, and consequently often has no idea what's actually going on. Waaaaay too much focus on job descriptions and way too little focus on making sure the customer is being taken care of FIRST."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would immediately put the entire company through Lean / Six Sigma / Agile training, and make it VERY clear that you can either get on the bus right now, or you will be run over by the bus. Enough fooling around trying to make 20,000 people with vested interests in the status quo happy."

"Work life balance. Job security. Growing department. Great people to work with."

"Certain areas are geographically isolated. Don't expect to do marketing outside of Columbus. Same goes for nearly any leadership level above director."

What don't you like about working at Nationwide Insurance?

"Leaders are promoted based on experience, not vision or qualifications. Lack of middle manager strategic discipline."

"Product differentiation. Something no one would/could copy until we it was too late to catch up."

"It's a good company if you are looking for a long term gig. Just don't expect great pay for a few years."

"The pay is below average for my level of knowledge and experience."

"There is a lack of continuity with the processes and information the people on the floor have. I would make it more cohesive."

"I don't like the fact that there is no control for the employees on how to accomplish goals. It is all driven by the management."
