The company was founded in 1833 by Joseph Auguste Pavin de Lafarge. Originally, the company would exploit limestone found in a quarry located in Mont Saint-Victor in France. It was in 1864 that the company began to rise to prominence as a cement manufacturer when Lafarge received a contract to deliver over 100 000 tonnes of lime to help build the Suez Canal that was under construction at the time.

From the very beginning, Lafarge has been creating innovative cement based products. The company created calcium aluminate cements and were also responsible for the creation of white Portland cement. In the following years, Lafarge would rise to a prominent position on the world cement market by acquiring numerous companies along the way, such as Coppee, Redland plc, Hima Cement Limited and Blue Circle Industries.
