Amgen Reviews (162)

"Amgen; wonderful work/life benefits. Outrageous HR management issues."

Amgen Review by Vendor Account Manager in Thousand Oaks, CA on

3.90

What do you like about working at Amgen?

Outstanding work/life benefits you won't get at most companies. Employees are a tight knit family.

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

No potential for growth. Amgen does not like to promote from within. HR department has become bloated with becoming the police department. The decision power should lie within the highly paid management teams that focus on everyday operations.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Amgen pays an insane amount of money to train and grow employees, but spends its HR resources recruiting and relocating from the outside. Doesn't make any sense. Before I left there was a push to promote within, but it never got off the ground. Also I need to emphasize: HR department has become bloated with becoming the police department. The decision power should lie within the highly paid management teams that focus on everyday operations.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

If you apply direct; unless you know somebody that has major pull, you won't get hired. However if you live cross state, then the HR recruiters would love to steal you from your current company and pay boatloads of money to relocate you. That might be your best strategy to even get an interview. Be prepared for a multitude of panel interviews.

"Overall Bliss: Above Average"

Amgen Review by Senior Associate in Cambridge, MA on

4.20

What do you like about working at Amgen?

Amgen was really lead the way with their generous compensation package. Also, the company promotes career development within the company in order to retain their employees.

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

Amgen is on the way down as they started to cut benefits, salaries, and their workforce. They are lobbying against what would ultimately cause competition against their top selling biologics; because of this taxpayers are paying even more out-of-pocket.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Amgen has inconsistencies within the various therapeutic areas. This corporate conglomerate has also spent tens of millions on lobbyists in Washington, D.C.; hoping to promote favorable decisions toward Amgen which would ultimately hurt taxpayers.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Beware of this evil corporation as they are lobbying against a generic pathway for biologic therapeutics. This delay has cost the taxpayers millions, while also hindering competition and scientific progress in the industry. Amgen has a monopoly in several franchises for this reason.

"Contract/Temporary assignment as Administrative Coordinator to Project and Contract Services department. Worked under the direction of Manager, Tom Mendel. He and his team were excellent to work with. I enjoyed working at Amgen and look forward to future opportunities there."

Amgen Review by Administrative Coordinator II, III in Newbury Park, CA on

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

I have very strong administrative and interpersonal skills and was very proficient in an Administrative Coordinator role at Amgen. I did interview for a few full-time permanent positions while there, but I believe they always hired from within the company; I wish that good, skilled candidates who are temporary staff had a little better chance to get in with this great company.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

It's a really terrific place to work. I hope I get the opportunity again in the near future.

Does this mean that there is no chance for someone that comes on as a temp. to obtain a permanent position? 01.27.12

"A good place to work if you are comfortable with the politics as this will determine your success more so than your knoweldge, quality of your work, professionalism, or dedication."

Amgen Review by Tech Lead in Thousand Oaks, CA on

What do you like about working at Amgen?

a lot of intelligent, well educated, decent people there

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

it's one very big bureaucracy, it's very difficult to get anything done. too many chefs and not enough Indians.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Amgen is a good company as far as big companies are concerned. They are also very generous to their people. Collectively however, as a company is has little tolerance for strong characters so steer clear from being to direct, using any words that could be interpreted as aggressive, and be very aware of any mannerisms that could be interpreted as defensive.

"My experience at Amgen"

Amgen Review by Instructional Designer on

3.30

What do you like about working at Amgen?

Great resources are available, both hardware and software. Request any software you need for your work. It will be on your desk in the morning.

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

Some of the managers I've worked with there are so secure in their positions from having worked there for so many years they've pulled up their drawbridge and retreated into their offices, where they sit counting their 401-K, and don't care about or have much sympathy for the people under them who are trying to move up.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Come out of your shell. Try to remember what it was like when you were moving up and worked hands-on.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

It will all depend on who is interviewing you and for what position. Just know your stuff.

"One of the best companies to work for"

Amgen Review by Associated IS in Thousand Oaks, CA on

4.80

What do you like about working at Amgen?

Almost everything. The benefits + salary packages are amongst the most competitive, the resources available to their staff, ESPP offerings, vacation time/paid time off, and the work-life balance.

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

Depending on the group, career advancement could be difficult.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Management can learn a great deal from their employees if they take the time. Communication about current and potential jobs and projects are also a very good things that should be discussed from time to time.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Amgen is a great place, where you will meet a lot of positive people. Make sure your interview shows the kind of personality you are.

"why after 2 years you are now seeking my input?"

Amgen Review by Project Specialist in Greenville, RI on

3.40

What do you like about working at Amgen?

ACT-1 was very supportive during my contract work period at Amgen. If I had an Admin need. It was satisfied

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

I am not able to speak negatively about ACT-1 except that when ACT-1 was being phased out of AMGEN as was I and the other AMGEN contractors I would have appreciated ACT-1 offering those loyal employees placement opportunities with ACT-1 sphere of influence.

What suggestions do you have for management?

I have no suggestions. On-site management was very good; but headquarters was several thousand miles away in California so I am not sure what the philosophy of ACT-1 main company was?

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

I have no tips to offer

"Its not worth the stress"

Amgen Review by Amgen Employee in Thousand Oaks, CA on

2.60

What do you like about working at Amgen?

Great benefits and perks

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

VERY political and competitive amongst support staff. No real growth opportunities for support staff. Constantly feel that you have to "fight" to keep your job. Demands put on support staff in some depts. are wayyyy too much for what the compensation is, yet in other depts. they have a very easy job and make more money, Not fair or equitable at all.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Company needs to slow down on the demands they make of people, makes it very stressful and people are getting lost in the shuffle

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

If you have a family or a life outside of work, then look elsewhere!

"I hated Amgen Rhode Island. Quitting was hard because they pay well, but it was the best decision of my life."

Amgen Review by Mfg Assoc II in Warwick, RI on

1.90

What do you like about working at Amgen?

It was a start-up, so a very good learning opportunity

What don't you like about working at Amgen?

Promotions were not based on technical skill, rather, the ability to 'suck up' to upper management...and not many of the upper managers were that competent compared to the lower level engineers.

What suggestions do you have for management?

Stop promoting your friends.

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

Stay away from the Rhode Island site...management is dysfunctional, and people step on each other to get ahead. It doesn't seem to be this way at the other Amgen sites...only Rhode Island.
