A VP of sales will head the sales department for a company. This person will be accountable to the company's president on all sales matters. They will generally look after the numbers to make sure that the company is meeting its projections. They will oversee a department of sales managers.
Skillset: This is a serious management position that requires a diverse skillset. VPs of sales will need knowledge of sales and advertising. They will also need management skills to motivate employees. In addition, they will need familiarity with analytical methods. They must be able to handle many different responsibilities at once.
Education: In order to reach this point in a career, a person will need more than just experience. An undergraduate degree in business is typically useful. Most companies will at least encourage their budding executives to go on and get an MBA in some related field.
Career Path: People who make it this far will have lots of experience and a good track record. They will have worked in sales, usually as an area manager. They will have the management skillset, which includes the ability to communicate and motivate. Education helps, though it is not the most important thing.
