Star Market is a grocery store chain in New England. Although the chain was purchased by Shaw Markets, a division of Jewel-Osco, the name Star Markets is still used on many stores. Some were even changed from Shaw’s to Star Markets starting in 2008. Some stores are called Shaw’s Star Market and some Star Market Supervalu. The company trades by the abbreviation SVU. Star Markets began in 1918 with the opening of one small store in Watertown, Massachusetts by an Armenian immigrant, Sarkis Mugar. A second store opened in 1932 and the cahin kept on growing from there. The Mugar family owned the stores until 1968. There are now 169 stores, mainly in the greater Boston area.
