Overview
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is an independent, applied research and development organization. Established by oil magnate Thomas Slick, Jr. in 1947, its initial mission was to provide contract R&D to industries and the U.S. government. SwRI's early contributions included innovations for the automotive industry, environmental sciences and materials research. The institute quickly grew to become the largest nonprofit of its kind in the United States.
