A lead technician is a person who oversees the other technicians on a help line call floor. They serve in a managerial capacity for the other technicians, and they will also be in charge of delegating work or handling escalated calls.
Skill Sets:
An effective lead technician needs to be calm and responsible, and they should have excellent leadership and organizational abilities. Because they will be taking escalated calls, they should be skilled with conflict resolution, and they should also be willing to act as a liaison between the technicians and management.
Education:
This position does not necessarily need a higher degree of education, though this varies from company to company. Typically, rather than a formal degree, the lead technician is required to earn some forms of certification in the field itself. In many cases, the company will pay for the lead technician to acquire that certification, helping them to advance in their chosen field.
Career Path:
Most lead technicians start as technicians themselves. They spend a fair amount of time doing the work that they will eventually oversee, giving them a bird's eye view of all the issues and all of the disputes and problems they will need to fix.
