A field technician travels to customer locations to provide support and troubleshoot technical hardware and software related issues. On a typical day, a field technician will assist in helping clients solve technical issues by troubleshooting and repairing their computer or electronics on site.
Skillset: It is required that a field technician must demonstrate strong communication and troubleshooting abilities. They must be proficient in dealing with computer hardware and software issues or other electronics depending on the industry they specialize in.
Education: A high school diploma or GED is required for most positions while some specialized fields may require a degree and/or industry certifications. Employers may also offer on-the-job training or certification training.
Career Path: Field technicians must possess outstanding communication skills and an ability to troubleshoot computer hardware and software problems efficiently. Pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science and consider getting a master’s degree to increase desirability and promotional opportunities. Industry certifications may also add to qualifications and help build up a resume. Internships and Freelance projects are also a great way to gain experience.
