"I worked for the company for a year and I have experienced some kind of discrimination in the store I was at. Most of the employees were of Middle Eastern descent and there were about 3 African Americans working there. When I started, they treated me different from other new sales associates. Instead of teaching me how to use the register right away, they kept making me do tasks that men should do, such as cleaning up the garbage, cutting down boxes, sending me to get coffee and donuts for everyone and even made me carry a very heavy vacuum cleaner to another nearby RadioShack. This is the worst company I ever worked at because they never taught me anything and they made me feel very uncomfortable. I was too scared to say something then but I'm not holding my tongue anymore."

"RadioShack does not sell cutting edge services and products that appeal to the marketplace. The initial training is very short , about 3 days, and then it's all learning on the job."

"I liked being able to deal with multiple different wireless carriers, and being able to better serve my customers. There was a decent employee discount on merchandise/employee cell phone lines."

"Take this job if you are desperate and need a job, or, if you want the cell phone experience to get your foot in the door to a corporate store where you will make more money and get treated better. Other than that, AVOID this place like the plague."

What don't you like about working at RadioShack?

"Where to begin 1) This company is way too micromanaged. I swear a room full of half-brain dead monkeys could probably run this company better. 2) The DM has a tendency to play favorites with his managers and associates. If you're not one of them, tough luck. 3) This company is more numbers-driven than profit-driven. Why complain about numbers like upgrade checks which make 0 money for the company, or celebrate transfers which yet again make 0 dollars, when an associate may have 10 or more phones out for the week 4) Batteries only belong in certain environments. Kiosks are not one of those environments. Customers do not come up to a kiosk looking at phones and buy batteries. 5) Associates get little to no recognition. There are contests we are expected to compete in and managers get the prizes. Associates get nothing, usually not even a congratulations by the DM, or RM. 6) They have a tendency to hire from outside the company, and by that I mean replace your manager with people who have 0 management, retail, or cell phone sales experience. Yes, it happened to me and no, I nor anyone else at my store were offered the position. 7) Crappy advertising. If you expect sales you need to advertise your product, not have associates chase people down shouting, You upgrade phone now! 8) The company can and will change spiff policies to reduce pay, and try and make it seem like you are making more. 9) Again, upper-management should be entirely overhauled. 10) They set obscenely high metrics for certain things. 150+ % on accessories, which only count at point of sale with a phone. You sell 3 accessories another day without a phone Too bad, it actually hurts you. 38+ % service plans, which are typically half the price of the product. $7.99 for a service plan on a charger that costs $10.00 Yes, they expect you to sell it. 11) MINIMUM WAGE. If you ask for a raise, even if you've been with the company for several years, the response will always be the same, If you want a raise sell more phones. Yes, I have gotten that before and I can put out more phones than several stores in my district. 12) The company can be very shady at times. Our district manager has been trying to terminate three employees from a store that is supposed to be getting shut down so they cannot collect unemployment. He has the manager literally looking for any transgression no matter how minor to write them up. 13) They on occasion will not give you your legally obligated 30-minute meal break and still take it off our paycheck. 14) In some stores, the store manager knows less than the associates about how the store works. But, that might just be the external hiring thing. 15) If you are part-time, be prepared to work full-time hours without getting full-time benefits, because if you are not keyed in as full-time you do not receive the same benefits regardless of how many hours you work. 16) They want your sales pitches to be a rehearsed routine every single time. You will be given a sheet called the customer sales path and you are expected to follow it to the letter. If you do not you can get written up or terminated. So, instead of developing what works best for the associate, they have a one-size-fits-all sales plan which rarely works. 17) Store conditions are usually abysmal. The roof will probably be leaking and moldy, the cell phone cages are poplar wood with chicken wire for the doors, so merchandise is stolen very easily. And if anything breaks they expect the associates/managers to fix it. 18) Benefits are almost non-existent. With the wage you make, the medical plan is far too expensive to be able to afford if you aren't getting 1000 dollar paychecks. There is no tuition reimbursement, 0 stock options, you pay for your uniform (all of it), and after a year of employment for RadioShack I have accrued maybe 3 hours of vacation time. Unless you drive more than an hour or so for mandatory employee meetings, there is no payment for gas. Instead you only get paid for the time you are sitting in the meeting. So, 3 hours at $7.35 MAYBE pays for a portion of the gas it took to get out there and back. 19) Every week there is a new planogram for an area of merchandise. Usually the items shift 4 inches to the right or move up one level. So, you spend 8 hours re-organizing the batteries so they can look exactly the same as they did before you started. 20) The assistant manager program is a joke. You get put into it by choice of the DM, get a 2 dollar raise, are expected to have every single responsibility a store manager has, but also be expected to possibly relocate temporarily or drive an hour one way to cover a shift at another store even if it is only an associate's shift. And I did mention the 0 gas thing, didn't I And usually you are in the program for over a year, and when a store comes available, either they hire someone externally to take the store, or if they do promote in-house (which is rare), they usually promote someone who wants in the ASM program to begin with. 21) They are now going to be starting a door-to-door wireless specialist program where the wireless specialist goes around to businesses and homes trying to set up appointments to get people to upgrade their phones. 22) The quality of some of the products you sell is junk - Pointmobil, Enercell, Auvio, and RadioShack brands. The Pointmobil chargers make phones freak out or unresponsive when they are plugged in. Enercell chargers and adapters have a tendency to break on their first use and if you didn't get the 7 dollar service plan on your 15 dollar charger you're screwed. Auvio is just as bad. And the RadioShack brand audio cable causes nasty feedback or issues with whatever they are plugged into. 23) You are expected to sell $0.99 service plans on all cables, and cases that you sell as well. 24) You do not get ranked by the quality of your sales (how much money you made for your store that day), but by how many times you sell a product. 25) If you get injured on the job, be prepared for an arduous workers' comp battle. Even if you have witnesses to what happened, you still will need more evidence than that, and a doctor's notice. So good luck. 26) If you have the once-in-a-while 1,000 dollar paycheck, you get bumped up in the tax bracket and only get $800 or so. But, I'm not sure how much of that is the company instead of the IRS."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"OVERHAUL THE COMPANY! There is a reason RadioShack always is on the brink of bankruptcy, and it's not the associates' fault. It is the upper-management that probably has 0 business being in charge of a company."

"I would say the only point of working at RadioShack I enjoy is the customer demographic. Being able to help people set phones/electronics up is the key point of this company. I admire how RadioShack strives for customer service. If only they'd direct some of that appreciation/effection towards their employees."

"If you're a high school student, and have absolutely zero responsibilities or bills, then this job is perfect!If you have an apartment to pay for, then you're going to need a secondary job or income method."

What don't you like about working at RadioShack?

"RadioShack is too focused on no product sales, i.e. replacement plans. Some of these plans seem to cost almost half of the price of the item they're buying ( $7.99 for one year of protection on $15 headphones). On top of that, if we don't sell a certain percentage of replacement plans we are penalized. The micromanagment is atrocious. I should not be reprimanded by more than one person for a 15-minute tardy. For this company to become a pleasant work place in my market, there needs to be some changes in management and the expectations of sales associates."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would suggest employee appreciation. To me it feels like RadioShack holds no appreciation towards its lower level employees. This baffles me, seeing that other than paperwork, we do most of the work to keep the store functioning. A qualified store manager should know this already. It seems, however, that none of them do."
