A programmer’s job is to design and program software that fits their clients’ needs and specifications. On a typical day, a programmer will map out a plan to create an application, write the code for the application, and properly test the program for bugs and errors.
Skillset: Programmers are expected to be knowledgeable in multiple programming languages. They must understand how to create flow charts and compile code. They must also be able to work in a team environment and demonstrate excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
Education: Many programmers have degrees in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. It is highly possible for programmers without a degree to get hired if they can demonstrate strong programming and troubleshooting abilities.
Career Path: Successful programmers have strong knowledge in multiple programming languages and excellent mathematical skills. Work toward a bachelor’s degree in computer science or software engineering and consider finishing up a master’s degree to increase credentials. It is highly recommended to apply for internships and work on freelance projects to gain experience and build up a resume and portfolio.
